Nan Rae starting the Demo
Last night the San Fernando Valley Art Club had their March meeting with demonstrator Nan Rae. She is an expert in Chinese brush painting, who showed everyone how free spirited this way of painting can be. Nan made it look effortless as she painted a total of four paintings during the meeting and talked about the journey that led her from wanting to paint like Monet to this ancient form of Chinese brush painting called Literati.

Using only two basic brush strokes, Nan showed the group how to paint a poppy. In the photo above, she is finishing up the second painting of another flower. There were several times that the audience couldn't help but let out an
AHHH as Nan's quick brush work magically formed a leaf, a petal, a bud and then a finished painting.

After the break, Nan painted a grass orchid which symbolizes one of the four seasons. And last but not least, with ink, she painted bamboo. That was a real eye opener for everyone. If you didn't make it to the meeting, you missed a great fool proof trick for painting bamboo.
When the time was up everyone wanted Nan to keep painting but alas, we had to pack up and leave. Many thanks to Nan for making this meeting a wonderful success.
