I have had a wonderful Christmas but now I am reflecting on New Years. At the end of this week, we are entering not just a new year, but a new decade. Looking back on the last 10 years, I am grateful for so much; my husband, my art, new and familiar friends, my family, my good health and all the experiences over those ten years that have enriched my life. I have had a great time.
But I realize that so many are not as fortunate as I. Countless Americans are unemployed, many looking for jobs that no longer exist. The Bureau of Labor Statistics confirms that 1,086,000 non-farm private-sector jobs have been lost in the last 10 years in the USA while the population has increased by 34,573,000. So it isn't surprising that many people are scared, hopeless and discouraged.
As the world around us changes, it becomes even more important to find common ground. I believe art is one of those wonderful equalizers that can have a positive effect on everyone. With so much turmoil, the beauty of art may seem insignificant; but for me, it strengthens my resolve to continue forward with optimism and joy. I am hoping that your New Year is filled with all the things you love.
