Thursday dawned with me up and ready to paint all the lovely beaches that I had scouted the day before, only to find that the weather had changed. Overnight the fog had rolled in. OH NO!! No sun. I headed out to the Monterey Peninsula hoping the sun would break through but as I painted, the fog only became darker and more overcast. Below are two photos showing two different locations, one on Wednesday (sunny and bright) and the other Thursday (after the fog rolled in). The other challenging thing about the fog in Carmel is that the winds make the fog very inconsistent and change the scene every minute. One minute you can't see 20 feet in front of you and the next the sun is peaking through and all the colors and details come out. My morning painting was a study in split personalities. At about 10 AM, I wiped down my painting and headed for a new location.
I drove into the Carmel Valley and made the first right after the fog bank, into a development. Not knowing what I would find, I was pleasantly surprised to find the view for Earthbound at the end of the road. WHAT LUCK. I set up again and finished this in a flurry of paint from 11:30 AM to 5 PM, never stopping for lunch. Earthbound is the largest painting I did for the Carmel Art Festival at 16x20. It was quite a feat to complete it in one afternoon and I was happy to have two good painting to hand in for the show.
Although Earthbound sold on Saturday at the Carmel Art Festival, I have other plein air paintings that are for sale at Sharon's Plein Air Artwork or I can paint something especially for you.
